Miami University Bird Observatory
The Miami University Bird Observatory (MUBO) opened in the spring of 2005 and is located in Pfeffer Woods, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. This banding station is associated with the Natural Areas of Miami University and its close proximity to the university and the Talawanda High School makes it an ideal location for our classroom banding station. Forty years ago, this area was a pig pasture and the successional growth has led to a divserity of plants and plant structure. A prairie plot consructed in the 1970′s adds some grassland type habitat. This site is an important part in the inventory and cataloging projects for the 1300 acres of Miami University’s Natural Areas. Ultimately, we hope to supply information that would enable sound management decisions for use of this vital green space.
Detailed Directions: From US 27: Just south of Chestnut is the entrance to Pfeffer Park where there is a parking lot. If you park in the parking lot and walk to the western edge of the parking lot, you will see a gate. The orange/red dashes are the paths through Pfeffer Woods. Follow the left hand path south along the eastern edge of the park, uphill, behind the cemetery. The path runs into a black cinder type road that goes to the left (east) into the cemetery and right (west) along the south side of the woods. Turn right (West) onto the cinder road (you are walking) and about 1/2 mile to the West you will run into our picnic table sitting in the middle of the road.
