Summary

It has really started to pick up! We banded 36 and recaptured 22 from 18 species today. Gray Catbirds (9) were the bird of the day. Second place went to Northern Waterthrushes with six. I can’t remember seeing and hearing so many individuals in one place in southwestern Ohio before. We banded our first Baltimore Orioles of the season, 8 individuals of which 6 were recaptures from previous years including a female originally banded in 2004!!! Ms. Raynold’s sophomore Biology class from Talawanda High School were able to see lots of Orioles (both Orchard and Baltimore today). The students were a great help carrying birds as we checked nets and discussed bird migration and issues in bird conservation. We also recaptured a male goldfinch originally banded in mid April now sporting his new plumage. Firsts for the year included a Trail’s Flycatcher (Willow/Alder) and Veery.
